The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has learned many lessons in their implementation of a data governance program at the state level. In 2007, the agency made a realization about ensuring appropriate data quality to meet its obligations to protect our environment. Since that time, the agency has been committed to improving the usability and accessibility of their data. A large part of this investment has focused on building a data services organization and data governance strategy/processes. In this session we will discuss:
Randy Hedegaard manages the Data Service Section at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency which provides a coordinated data management structure to manage data issues for the diverse organization. His group's goals are service, governance and leadership to ensure that Agency data will be accessible and usable for staff and others that need it. Key components of this effort include defining and managing the prioritization process for data management needs, providing direction and guidance for establishing program incentives that encourages appropriate data management, and ensuring data governance processes are in place. He also facilitates the agency's data governance team and plays a key role to ensure technical systems interconnect with data systems to provide an informational system that serves the needs of the Agency
